One of my colleagues, Dawn Rasmussen, shared this article WRONG QUESTION, written by Jason Alba, President of jibberjobber.com. http://bit.ly/bPSP1D
Don’t let his tone put you off as there is great value in his perspective. He raises great points on effective ways for building mutually beneficial relationship with recruiters. I’ve actually shared a similar views in previous blog posts.
There are a few minor areas where Mr. Alba and I differ. He is absolutely correct that as recruiters we don’t have time to spend “coaching” candidates that aren’t appropriate for a position nor providing them with recommendations regarding their career search or on resume advice. However, I have found from interviewing candidates everyday that even top contenders need career and/or interview coaching.
It only takes a few minutes to "recommend" professional coaching, without having to coach. And it helps individuals realize they can get better results in their employment search with the support of a few coaching sessions. It is a wise investment. Here is my shameless plug, I do offer coaching services because I do care and ultimately I want people to be successful in their career search.
Jason also believes recruiters are only good at networking as it pertains to an open search assignment. I actually don't agree. Networking is critical and adds great value in fostering business relationship. While it may not have the high priority as the revenue generating activities, networking has to happen on a daily basis to collect marketing intelligence and trends and to learn whose who in the zoo in the markets we serve. Even if a candidate is not a top contender for today’s search assignment, that could change in a few days. And I find, they can add value in other ways. It’s a round world!
Otherwise, Mr. Alba is DEAD ON! I hope you find his article helpful.
